Swell Surf Hotel

For Surfers, By Surfers

Before we built our place, we thought that most hotels are clean but soulless and most hostels are dirty but fun, so it was our idea to combine the best aspects of hotel accommodation and great hostel vibes into one, cool place. The result is Swell: Swell by name and Swell by nature, you will have a spotlessly clean, comfortable, stylish room with a nice bed to enjoy a great night’s sleep after a day’s surfing. You’ll also have all the fun of a hostel and no, it doesn’t matter if you are 50 years old; you can socialise, chat, laugh and share all the magic of your sporty day.

At Swell, we pride ourselves on providing everything we would want ourselves when we are travelling. Our staff are famously friendly and accommodating and our food is superbly fresh, tasty and healthy, eaten in a really social setting. Our surf lessons are given by qualified surf coaches in shallow, safe, warm water. Surf theory lessons will also form part of your comprehensive learning curve, so you can learn how to select the right wave, paddle for it, catch it and pop-up. You’ll also learn how to start turning the surfboard too, so you can catch a longer ride.

When surfing is over for the day, you will have the afternoon to relax completely, hanging in a garden hammock in a gentle breeze, go shopping or browsing through Cabarete town, go take a tasty fish taco from the famous Gorditos; (just 3 minutes from our front door) or go and eat on the beach with your feet in the sand in one of the many ocean front restaurants, all a short walk from Swell.

If you are after even more adventure, then do join in some of the other activities we organise regularly for our guests, such as canyoning and/or rappelling down the famous and beautiful Magic Mushroom rock, horse-riding in the countryside or along our golden sandy beaches, mountain biking, learning to kiteboard, etc., there’s just so much to do.
We hold Yoga classes for you 3 times each week in our beautiful garden, or you can spoil yourself with a lovely massage or treatment at a local Spa. We provide free internet for you in the comfortable lounge/communal area so you can keep in touch with family (or even work if necessary). We also look after your Puerto Plata airport transfers, so all you need to do is to jump on the ‘plane at your departure airport and once you are on Caribbean soil, we will take complete care of you, collecting you safely from the arrivals area with one of our own drivers and bringing you straight to Swell’s door.

If you would like a vacation which is active, challenging and really fun, then Swell is the perfect choice for you. You might arrive alone, but you’ll leave us with a bunch of new friends made and memories to last a lifetime!

Learn to Surf with Swell

Surfing is a great watersport and when you are in the hands of true surf professionals, a very accessible sport for people of all ages. The Dominican Republic has some of the best surfing beaches of the Caribbean and caters for surfers of all levels, from perfect beginner beaches to offshore reefs for the expert surfers.

The water and air temperatures are warm year round, so leave your wetsuits at home.
At Swell surf camp, our surf lessons are given in groups in a structured manner, using properly I.S.A. qualified surf coaches; This means that Swell’s surf coaches have all completed specific training in teaching techniques, including Practical and Theory Lessons, Life Guard training and CPR/Basic First Aid, which are all part of the I.S.A. qualification. As a result, you could not be in safer hands.

Qualified surf instructors
Having qualified surf instructors means that you will receive good lessons from surf coaches who have themselves been taught how to communicate their methods and advice.

Surf theory lessons
Learning how waves are formed and how to spot the best place to sit, are just two of the topics covered in these lessons. With a week-long stay, our beginner surf lessons consist of 5 surf lessons, followed by supervised surfboard rental.

Surf Transport
Swell provides twice daily surf transport to the most consistent surf beach in the Caribbean. It’s a 10 minute drive and we are pretty much always the first ones at the beach in the mornings. We leave at 7 am to get the best conditions: glassy or offshore winds with the least amount of other surfers in the water.

Playa Encuentro: consistent waves year round!
Encuentro is our local surf spot, and it’s a 10 minute drive west of Cabarete. Warm water year-round; no need for wet-suits. The beach side is undeveloped, which means no high rise condos or McDonalds signs.

There are 2 things that make Playa Encuentro such great choice; it’s very consistent with around 350 surfable days per year. The other thing that is so good about Encuentro is that the spot caters for surfers of all levels with several different & distinct peaks to choose from.
Beginners can always safely catch the waves at Bobo’s, where the water depth is about chest deep.

See you in the water soon

It doesn’t matter if you’re a solo traveller, a couple or a group of friends, never surfed before or are an expert surfer; you will love What the Dominican Republic has to offer on your surf holiday
